• INFO: John Gortsema, 85, of Grangeville, passed away Thursday, March 8, 2007, at his Grangeville home. John was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Greencreek to Jake and Minnie Gortsema. He was the oldest of six children. In 1927, they moved to the family ranch in the Tolo Lake area. He attended the Lake School. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the European Theater. John returned to the Grangeville area in 1945 upon being discharged. John married Shirley Hayhurst in February 1946 at Grangeville. They had two children, Jim and Janet. In 1947, he took over the family ranch where they lived until 1960, when the ranch was sold and they moved to Grangeville, where his truck driving career began. He worked for Art Smith Logging and then Baker Truck Service until his retirement in 1991, at age 70. He was proud of his record of driving 2,500,000 miles accident free. John was a lifelong member of the Grangeville Elks Lodge. John is survived by his daughter, Janet Gortsema of Bliss, Idaho; sister, Kobie Pils of Nampa; brothers, Marion and Bill Gortsema of White Bird; grandson, Jason Gortsema; granddaughter, Jennifer; and great-grandson, James Lee Gortsema II, all of Grangeville; numerous nieces and nephews, and caregiver and good friend Deanne Clark and her family. John was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Carl; one sister, Janette; and his son, Jim Gortsema. A graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Prairie View Cemetery in Grangeville, with the Rev. Harold Gott officiating.

• INFO: Janette Sonnenburg of Grangeville died Friday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston of cancer. She was 70. She was born Aug. 19, 1924, at Greencreek, Idaho, to Jake and Minnie Gortsema. The family moved to Tolo Lake near Grangeville, where she attended school. Following her education, she moved to Seattle where she worked as a waitress. She married Martin Sonnenburg on Aug. 15, 1942, at Seattle. Early in the marriage, her husband was in the armed forces and lived in various places in California and Oregon. Following his discharge, the couple returned to Seattle before moving to Grangeville. They have lived in Grangeville ever since. She enjoyed crafts, camping, crocheting and traveling. She was a member of the Good Sams Club. Survivors include her husband at the family home; a son, Les Sonnenburg of Grangeville; daughters, Rhonda Stockton and Marsha Cunningham, both of Grangeville; brothers, John Gortsema of Grangeville, Marion Gortsema of White Bird and William Gortsema of Slate Creek; a sister, Kobie Pils of Nampa; and four grandchildren. A brother, Carl Gortsema, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Noland Funeral Home in Grangeville with the Rev. Chris Blair of the Grangeville Christian Church officiating. Burial will follow at Prairie View Cemetery.
